Search Engine giant Google has a simple philosophy that guides their business practices: don’t be evil. This may be a side-swipe at some of their competitors, who have questionable business practices, but it simplifies what could have been a comprehensive lists of dos and don’ts.
The motto seems to have worked. At the time of writing, Google is the largest media company in the World. That’s right – an Internet Search Engine is the biggest media company in the World.
I prefer to put things in positive terms. Therefore, I suggest you, “be good.”
There will be times when bending the rules a little will save you time or money. Telling a little white lie to a customer to get them to hand over the money, or making promises that you can’t keep. In the long term, this kind of thinking grows – your character is built from your smallest actions.
Honesty, integrity and fairness are foundations to lasting success. Your character is your most important asset – more valuable than whatever figure you have in your bank account. If you damage that to make a quick buck, you will always end up poorer for it in the long run.
If people (customers) know they can trust you, they will come back again and again. They will trust what you say, and recommend you to others.
You have your own moral compass to guide your own actions. You know when your doing something you shouldn’t do. If you ever you start to question whether you should be doing something that is on the dodgy side, that should be the signal not to do it.
Just remember: there are no short cuts to integrity. It’s good to be good.
